How to earn sats
Updated October 2, 2026
Understand first: What stacking sats means
You can earn sats on purchases you were going to make anyway. Some cards and gift-card apps pay rewards in bitcoin. You can also receive bitcoin for work or tips.
A 2% reward on $100 is $2, worth 2,359 sats at the current price (as of October 2, 2026, 18:34 UTC).
Small rewards can accumulate. Extra spending can swallow them.
Ways to earn
| Method | What you receive | What to check | Useful when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit card | Bitcoin rewards on eligible purchases | Interest, fees, rate caps | You already use credit and pay in full |
| Debit or prepaid card | Sats on eligible spending | Account charges, rewards, withdrawals | You want rewards without borrowing |
| Gift card | Sats for buying an eligible store card | Restrictions, rate, refund rules | The purchase is already planned |
| Work or tips | Bitcoin for something you provide | Payment terms and tax records | Clients or readers want to pay in sats |
Credit card rewards
Gemini and Fold offer credit cards with bitcoin rewards. Rates depend on the purchase category, limits, and program terms. Check the current offer before applying.
Pay the statement in full. Interest can cost far more than the rewards are worth. Compare bitcoin rewards with the cash rewards you could earn elsewhere.
Debit rewards
A debit or prepaid card can offer sats without borrowing. Check account charges, subscription requirements, eligible purchases, and withdrawal fees. A debit card does not automatically mean a free account.
Gift cards
Buy a gift card for a store where you already plan to shop, earn the offered sats, then use the card for that purchase. Fold is one example.
Check the reward rate, restrictions, and refund rules first. Buying a gift card you will not use is an expensive way to earn a small reward.
Work and tips
Some clients pay in bitcoin. Readers can also tip useful posts on Stacker News or send "zaps" on Nostr through Lightning.
These are payments for something you provide, rather than rewards for spending. Agree on the amount, currency, and payment method before doing the work.
Round-ups use your money
A round-up can turn a $4.35 purchase into a $5 debit and use the extra 65 cents to buy bitcoin. That is a small automatic purchase, not free sats.
Check fees and keep it within your budget.
Keep the records
Sats received for work are generally income in the US. Purchase rebates and other rewards can have different tax treatment. Keep the program statements and ask a tax professional how to record your cost basis.
Selling or spending those sats later can create a gain or loss to report. Do I owe taxes on sats? covers the general rules.
Rewards held by a company remain under its custody until you withdraw. Check the minimum and fee before moving them to a wallet you control.
Try one planned purchase
Choose something already on your shopping list. Compare the reward with the fees and effort, then decide whether it is worth repeating.
Use the sats converter to see the reward in dollars. Earn a little from your usual spending, without giving your budget extra work.
